HKEX first reviewed listed issuers' implementation of ESG reporting guide

Last Friday, The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (HKEX) published its first review on listed issuers' compliance with the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guide. In the 400 randomly selected ESG reports, over 80% of them complied with the disclosure requirements in 9 of 11 Aspects, while only 38% complied with all Aspects. The reasons for non-compliance include vague or partial disclosure and do not give considered reasons for non-disclosure. As ESG reporting will continue to develop, the quality of disclosure is expected to grow. Issuers should steer away from the “box-ticking” approach and take ESG report as a valuable channel to communicate ESG matters with investors and stakeholders.
